ACNC compliance support for Sydney charities

We help charities keep the records, reports and dates behind their ACNC obligations in order, so reporting becomes a routine task instead of a scramble.

What it is

The short version of ACNC reporting

All ACNC-registered charities, except those registered with the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, must submit an Annual Information Statement each year. Medium and large charities (other than Basic Religious Charities) must also submit an annual financial report. We help you prepare, keep the supporting records and track your dates.

Size and reporting

What size is your charity?

ACNC reporting depends on annual revenue. These are the current ACNC size bands and what each must do:

  • Small (annual revenue under $500,000): Annual Information Statement; an annual financial report is optional, and there is no ACNC requirement for review or audit
  • Medium ($500,000 or more but under $3 million): Annual Information Statement and an annual financial report that is reviewed or audited
  • Large ($3 million or more): Annual Information Statement and an audited annual financial report

Some charities, such as Basic Religious Charities or those using transitional arrangements, follow different rules, and your governing document or funding agreements can add requirements. The Annual Information Statement and financial report are due within six months of the end of your reporting period, and you can check your charity’s due date on the ACNC Charity Register. Charities must meet these reporting requirements, along with their other obligations, to keep their ACNC registration. Charities must also keep appropriate financial and operational records, and ACNC rules require keeping them for seven years. Sources: ACNC charity size, ACNC due dates and ACNC record keeping.

FAQ

ACNC compliance questions, answered

Does every charity have to submit an Annual Information Statement?

All ACNC-registered charities, except those registered with the Office of the Registrar of Indigenous Corporations, must submit an Annual Information Statement each year.

Does a small charity need to submit a financial report?

For small charities, submitting an annual financial report is optional, and the ACNC encourages it. If your charity’s governing document requires a financial report, you must submit one.

When is the Annual Information Statement due?

Generally within six months of the end of your reporting period. The two most common due dates are 31 December for charities that report to a 30 June year end, and 30 June for charities that report to a calendar year. Check the ACNC Charity Register for your date, as the ACNC can announce extensions.

Do you perform external audits or reviews?

No. We don’t perform external audits or reviews. We prepare your records and reports so the process runs smoothly, and we can refer you to trusted independent auditors and reviewers.

Do you give legal advice?

No. We provide financial and compliance support. For legal questions about your constitution or obligations, speak to a lawyer or contact the ACNC.

Can you help if we are behind on reporting?

Yes. Talk to our team early. We can look at what is outstanding, organise your records and help you get back on track.
